Overview of the Wine
Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Grenache, Syrah, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, sunny days, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields low, picking the fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept around 8000 cases a year divided between ten different cuvees, Broken Stones, James Berry Vineyard, The Hexe, Bone Rock, Rocket Block, G2 Vineyard, Paderewski Vineyard, Heart Stone Vineyard, 4hearts Vineyard, and James Berry Vineyard White.

The 4hearts Vineyard is just a short ways down Willow Creek Road from our estate. It is a wonderful, old school, dry farmed vineyard, planted low density and head trained, naturally without wires or irrigation. On this extremely steep hillside vineyard we have three blocks of fruit. Petite Sirah from the very highest point of the vineyard, then below and nearby on a South slope we have Zinfandel, and, *gasp, some Cabernet Sauvignon. Since these blocks are all dry farmed the fruit is very intense, so we prefer to let the cuvee age for 30+ months in a mix of French and, *second gasp, American oak. With this kiss of American oak and a Petite Sirah dominant blend we are tipping our proverbial hat to the classic California style, unabashed, proud of its uniqueness in this world of wine.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

The curve ball in the Saxum lineup (besides the white). This wine spent 30 months in a mix of French and American oak. (Gasp, American?) Yes, and it's frickin awesome. This is what you serve your friend that only likes "old world wine" when they come over. They'll say they hate it, but secretly they'll be loving every sip you "force" them to drink!

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The Petite Sirah-heavy 2018 Four Hearts Vineyard ... reminds me of a great vintage of Ridge’s Monte Bello Cabernet (I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some American oak in here as well) with its blackberry, blueberry, cigar, and sappy flower aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied and offers a big, mouth-filling texture, beautiful balance, and a great finish. Give it a few years.

95 Points - Vinous
Inky violet. Deep kirsch, blackberry, floral oil and baking spice qualities on the nose, along with hints of vanilla and woodsmoke. Coats the palate with alluringly sweet, dark berry preserve, vanilla, cola and baking spice flavors that show fine clarity and back-end thrust. Velvety tannins add grip to a very long, smoky finish that features suggestions of dark chocolate, cherry preserves and candied flowers. Raised in a combination of French and used American oak.

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 4hearts Vineyard is a blend of 52% Petite Sirah, 21% Tempranillo, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Zinfandel, matured again this vintage in a portion of four-year-old air-dried American oak (around 32 months). Deep ruby-purple, it has gregarious scents of cassis and roasted plums, with layers of mint, soy sauce, licorice and violet. The medium-bodied palate has a grainy, seamless texture, savory fruits, and a long, uplifted finish.
