Overview of the Wine
It must be impossible to praise Groffier’s wines in a way that hasn’t been done before. In every recent vintage, this domaine has produced complex, delicious, lushly textured wines that are immediately appealing, but also have the balance to improve for many years. So it was no surprise that in the 6th Edition of Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide, Groffier was ranked as one of the top four Burgundy producers of the late 1990s. While Robert and his son Serge let their grapes ripen longer than most producers, their methods are traditional. They severely limit yields and then meticulously sort the grapes after harvest. There is no strict formula for new oak or the amount of time each wine spends in barrel.

They check the wines regularly during every stage of development and let their palates guide them. Domaine Groffier also owns some fantastic vineyards and they really maximize the quality by using the Cordon Royat method of training the vines. This increasingly rare technique reduces yields and produces very concentrated grapes. The two Grand Crus are always some of the top representations of their respective vineyards. Groffier also owns the largest single parcel of the unofficial Grand Cru Chambolle “Les Amoureuses.” Even the Bourgogne comes from superior vineyards – one parcel is next to the Grand Cru Clos Vougeot and the other is adjacent to the vineyards of Morey-St-Denis.

Tasting Notes
Bonnes Mares is a burgundian Grand Cru, produced in Côte de Nuits. This is one of the most famous wines of this vineyard, recognized worldwide for its finesse and quality. This small vineyard of 15 hectares is located straddling the towns of Morey St Denis and Chambolle Musigny. The Bonnes Mares offers a very dense ruby color. The nose is complex and very refined, it opens with notes of red fruits such as thin raspberry, cherry... Black fruit aromas are also present. On the palate it is fine, nice, wine gradually unfolds and reveals its incomparable texture, but it also reveals present tannins. The aromatic richness is developped on a very long finish. The production of Groffier Estate, well noted by the tasters, will offer you finesse and length.

98 Points - Vinous
The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from 80-year old vines: 100% whole bunch with one-third new oak. This takes time to unfold on the nose when often this cuvée is quite medium. The aromatics say: Hold your horses. Then it unfurls to reveal slightly tertiary black fruit, tobacco and crushed limestone, almost flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Silky texture, poised acidity, this might be the most elegant and refined Bonnes-Mares that Nicolas Groffier has produced. I confess, I could not resist swallowing my tasting measure. This is one of Nicolas Groffier's finest achievements to date.
