Overview of the Wine
At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region with the cork business as his goal. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds, acquired Herdade do Mouchão for wine production.

In 1901 the first vineyards were planted on the property and, in 1929, construction began on a traditional winery and distillery, which still produces Mouchão brandy today.

Today, Herdade do Mouchão continues to be managed and worked on by the descendants of the original family and the entire winemaking process remains virtually unchanged, preserving the traditional harvest by hand and the fermentation of the grapes in stone presses, using foot treading. It is these techniques and the entire success story of Herdade do Mouchão that makes this wine-growing company so close to what wines used to be like.

Sustainable.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Complex black fruit, spices and black chocolate with nuts. Its warm notes of cocoa, tobacco and black fruit are finely balanced with fresh notes of mint and eucalyptus.

Decant or open 2 to 6 hours before serving. Serve 12-14°C to accompany local sheep cheeses, almond or walnut pies, chocolate mousse or black chocolate. Delicious with red fruit.

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast
A fortified, wood aged wine, this is sweet with a prune aroma and dense, ripe black fruits. It is a reminder that Mouchão's founding family, the Reynolds, came from the Douro and Port in the 1890s. Drink this fine wine now.

91 Points - Wine Advocate
The fortified red 2016 Sobremesa Tonel Aged was produced with Alicante Bouschet grapes, fortified to 20% alcohol and kept 110 grams of sugar, with high acidity and a low pH. It matured in 2,500-liter oak vat for no less than six years. It really feels acidic and is lacking enough sugar to compensate the alcohol, tannins and acidity. What will happen in the bottle? 2,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2024.
