Overview of the Wine
Senses Wines is the dream of three childhood friends. Christopher Strieter, Max Thieriot and Myles Lawrence-Briggs partnered with critically acclaimed winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, to produce world-class wines from renowned vineyards planted by their families. Since founding in 2011, Senses’ production has grown to include many coveted vineyard sites throughout northern California.
Senses’ estate vineyards are located in the West Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley regions of Sonoma County, specifically just outside the town of Occidental where the three founders grew up.
The wines embody the natural characteristics of the vineyards from where the grapes are grown. The team believes the vineyards are their greatest assets, and they meticulously farm each vine to be as hands-off as possible in winemaking. This approach ensures complexity and purity, vintage after vintage. Grapes are hand sampled and harvested at ideal ripeness, cold-soaked for a few days, fermented with yeasts indigenous to the vineyard, and ultimately pressed and barreled into a selection of French cooperages.

Winemaker Tasting Notes
An early spring with unseasonable heat marked the beginning of the 2022 growing season. However, by the middle of the vintage, a long and mild summer had set in with the predictable pattern of fog rolling in most evenings and burning off by midmorning in most cases with few "pea soup" days to stall ripening after verasion took place. This set the fruit on a path for long even ripening with full phenolic development. However, right at harvest mother nature threw a couple of curveballs, first in the form of more heatwaves
followed closely by early rainstorms, increasing the threat of mildew and botrytis exponentially. However, careful canopy management and sugar monitoring meant the fruit came in clean and mostly unaffected by the late rains or excessive heat
The 2022 Russian River Valley Chardonnay springs with spritely scents of fresh grapefruit, yuzu, and white peaches plus suggestions of sea spray, wet pebbles, and lime blossom. The full-bodied palate has plenty of freshness to back up the citrus and stone fruit flavors, finishing on a compelling minerally note.
This shows pretty density, with aromas of dried apples, citrus and some flint and matchsticks. It’s full-bodied yet shows tension and drive. Lots of flavor and intensity, with a touch of bitter lemons. Zippy. Drink and enjoy.
Like the Sonoma Coast, the 2022 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is sourced from across the range of the Senses single vineyards and was raised in French oak barrels for 14 months. Picking up a hint more pf a golden tinge, it opens to aromas of salted pineapple, a touch of smoky flint, orange blossoms, and yellow flowers. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a coating texture, notes of toasted almond throughout the midpalate, and a long finish, with delicate baking spices floating on the back palate. Fleshier than the Sonoma Coast and more approachable, it’s the most immediate of these wines from Senses and is ready to drink now or over the coming 7-8 years.
