Overview of the Wine
Domaine Michel Magnien has evolved into a Burgundy producer of a singular style and philosophy from their cellars located in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Michel Magnien was born in 1946 and worked alongside his father Bernard from a young age. The Magniens sold their grapes to the local cooperative until 1993 when his son Frederic joined the family business and persuaded his father to bottle the entire harvest by themselves. Frederic Magnien began experimenting with organic practices in the late 1990s and the entire production was certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2015. Frederic has also evolved the style of the wines and today elevage takes place in used oak and clay jars.

Tasting Notes
Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees is a lieu-dit lying below the D974 directly below the grand cru of Charmes-Chambertin. Seuvrees comes from the Latin “separatas” and was named because the plot is separated by the borders of Gevrey and Morey. It is from clay-limestone soils with round stones of varying sizes. Les Seuvrees delivers classic Gevrey-Chambertin flavors of black fruit, licorice, violets, and spices with an underlying earthiness. Fifty-year-old vines bring unexpected richness and depth to this village-level bottling. The wine is a pure expression of its terroir thanks to its elevage in a combination of used oak and clay jars.

A distinctly earthy and sauvage-inflected nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of mostly wild dark berries and forest floor. There is even better volume to the punchier and more powerful medium weight flavors that possess both better density as well as better depth and persistence. Solid quality here in a package that should reward mid-term keeping.
