Overview of the Wine
After building the highly successful Realm Cellars in Napa Valley, vintner Juan Mercado set his sights on Paso Robles with the vision of cultivating a globally respected wine brand. Mercado founded RIISE in 2019 to produce world-class Rhone varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet. The fruit comes from three estate properties and several of the area’s other most acclaimed vineyard sites, the majority of which are overseen by top vineyard managers Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope. The wines are brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.

The RIISE winemaking philosophy is one of minimalism, with the vineyards and varietals given the chance to shine through in their purest expressions. Texture forms the backbone of these wines, which are an exercise in balance and grace.

(The Wine Palate)

97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
Ripe black fruits, ground pepper, salted meats, game, and leafy herb notes all define the 2021 Peace, another powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that has a stacked mid-palate, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and blockbuster length. Based on 87% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petite Sirah that saw 10% whole clusters and 26 months in 60% new oak, it’s going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and my money is on it seeing its 20th birthday in fine form.

95 Points - The Wine Palate
The 2021 Peace is composed of 87% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petite Sirah. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the glass with bold notes of juicy black cherries and plum preserves, followed by hints of tar, licorice, lavender oil, and camphor. The full-bodied palate delivers a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and a lively line, supporting the vibrant fruit through the long, mineral-laced finish.

95 Points - Wine Advocate
The 2021 Peace combines 87% Syrah with 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah. The nose is the darkest and most brooding of the Riise lineup, showing aromas of ripe black and purple fruits, new leather, dark spices and hints of savory, meaty touches that gain amplitude with aeration. The palate is rich, seamless and full-bodied but retains admirable poise and energy through the long, saturated, decadent finish. As with the rest of the Riise wines, it manages a rare midpoint between modern, slick textures and refined, alluring energy that should develop beautifully in the cellar. (ML)

93 Points - Vinous
The 2021 Peace opens with mentholated freshness, blending crushed blackberries and plums with savory herbs and a hint of tobacco. Cool-toned and sleek, it builds tension as noticeably ripe wild berry fruit is balanced by a tinge of clove that emerges toward the close. The finish leaves pleasantly chewy concentration and liquid violet florals, tapering off with extreme length and blackberry resonance.
