Overview of the Wine
After building the highly successful Realm Cellars in Napa Valley, vintner Juan Mercado set his sights on Paso Robles with the vision of cultivating a globally respected wine brand. Mercado founded RIISE in 2019 to produce world-class Rhone varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet. The fruit comes from three estate properties and several of the area’s other most acclaimed vineyard sites, the majority of which are overseen by top vineyard managers Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope. The wines are brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.

The RIISE winemaking philosophy is one of minimalism, with the vineyards and varietals given the chance to shine through in their purest expressions. Texture forms the backbone of these wines, which are an exercise in balance and grace.

(The Wine Palate)

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Jovian is a different beast with its Tempranillo-dominated nose of red and black fruits, spice, sandalwood, and peppery herb-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied red that's concentrated, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, tons of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age but will cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. The blend is 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petit Sirah, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, from the Four Hearts, Paderewski, Full Draw, and ONX Vineyards, and it was completely destemmed and spent 26 months in 60% new French oak.

95 Points - The Wine Palate
The 2021 Jovian is made from 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache, and 5% Syrah. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little shaking and coaxing to bring out notes of prunes, blackberry preserves, and dusty soil, followed by hints of black tea, Indian spices, and fallen leaves. The full-bodied palate delivers firm, chewy tannins and a lively backbone supporting the tightly wound black fruit, finishing long and earthy.

94 Points - Wine Advocate
The 2021 Jovian is a co-fermented blend of 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It is a successful, modern expression of Paso Robles Tempranillo, which can often take on either an overly rustic or overly polished form. The nose opens with a medley of red and black fruits lifted by dried herbal accents and petrichor aromas. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with considerable tannic grip. It concludes with a serious, structured, sturdy finish of intense but precise tannins, welcomely filled in by its ripe, layered fruit profile. This will take a few years to integrate and become approachable, but it is very well executed, as with the rest of the Riise roster. (ML)

94 Points - Vinous
The 2021 Jovian is darkly alluring, mixing grilled sage with baking spices, olive, and violet-laced blackberries on the nose. Silken textures and ripe red berry fruits flood the palate, while a saturation of minerals and fine tannins adds youthful poise toward the close. Tremendous depth and clarity are on display, as the 2021 finishes structured and long, leaving a balsamic tinge to resonate. The Jovian is the most powerful wine in the Riise portfolio. It is a blend of 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache, and 5% Syrah.
