Overview of the Wine
After building the highly successful Realm Cellars in Napa Valley, vintner Juan Mercado set his sights on Paso Robles with the vision of cultivating a globally respected wine brand. Mercado founded RIISE in 2019 to produce world-class Rhone varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet. The fruit comes from three estate properties and several of the area’s other most acclaimed vineyard sites, the majority of which are overseen by top vineyard managers Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope. The wines are brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.
The RIISE winemaking philosophy is one of minimalism, with the vineyards and varietals given the chance to shine through in their purest expressions. Texture forms the backbone of these wines, which are an exercise in balance and grace.

(The Wine Palate)
97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Doyen is more Grenache-based and is mixed with 18% Mourvèdre and 17% Syrah that was mostly destemmed and raised in 25% new 500-liter barrels. Red and black fruits, toasted spice, pepper, and savory herb and floral notes all define this beauty, and it's full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming from a blend of the Shadow Canyon, Catapult, and Paderewski vineyards, it has a beautiful mix of richness and elegance. It will stand toe-to-toe with the finest Southern Rhônes out there and should have 10-15 years of prime drinking.
96 Points - The Wine Palate
The 2021 Doyen is a blend of 65% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, and 17% Syrah. Deep garnet-purple colored, it waltzes out with a gorgeous perfume of kirsch, red currant jelly, and juicy blackberries, leading to hints of candied violets, cinnamon stick, and forest floor. The full-bodied palate delivers elegant black and red berry layers with a floral undercurrent and fine-grained texture, finishing with a refreshing lift.
94 Points - Vinous
Spicy to the core, the 2021 Doyen opens with a dark mix of cedar shavings, dried orange peel, candle wax, and clove. It is deeply textural, with silken waves of ripe red and blue fruits, all neatly balanced by a core of vibrant acidity. The senses are drenched in primary concentration as the 2021 Doyen moves into the savory spectrum, leaving nuances of cocoa and spice. This is a bit of a big boy but the balance within cannot be denied.
93 Points - Wine Advocate
The 2021 Doyen is 65% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre and 17% Syrah, aged in predominately one-year-old 500-liter barrels. The nose is modern and flashy but retains a graceful, composed nuance, with black-fruited aromas accented by toasted tobacco, turned earth and fresh herbs. The palate is ripe, plush and seamless, but as with the nose, refrains from going over the top. The finish is long and layered, with clear delineation and refinement without feeling excessively uniform. (ML)
