Overview of the Wine

Louis Guntrum was established in 1648, and since 2003 has been owned and operated by Louis Konstantin Guntrum, who is the 11th generation of the Guntrum family to make wine. During the French Revolution, the Guntrum family fled across the Rhine river and temporarily relocated in Bensheim. In 1909, Louis Guntrum returned to Nierstein and founded the Louis Guntrum winery as it is known today. In February 1945, during World War II, U.S.General Patton occupied the winery and the family mansion, having crossed the Rhein river directly at the Louis Guntrum estate. The current generation is focused on producing high-quality wines that are created with passion and rooted in history.

The Louis Guntrum cellars lie on the banks of the Rhine between Oppenheimer and Nierstein. The 11th generation, Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the sole owner, is managing the estate today.

Modern cellar technology, combined with the best of traditional wine-making and philosophy have formed a harmonious relationship, and are responsible for the production of some of Germany‘s finest wines, of which we are truly proud.

Harvest Notes: Harvest was a miracle. There was a LOT of rain in spring, and a very late blossoming season, that lasted about three weeks, with strong infections of downy mildew. A cool start to the summer provided very low expectations for 2016 vintage, but this all changed with six weeks of beautiful sunshine and unseasonal temperatures throughout the month of September and into October. 2016 will be significantly lighter in alcohol than 2015, but pH and acidity levels as well as aromas of the grapes and juices confirm, that 2016 will yet again be another good vintage, albeit quite different in expression than 2015.

Winemaking Process: “Sweet idleness“ is the motto, with little to no interference into the natural process of fermentation. The wine undergoes gentle pressing, with fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of about 16°C. The wine is aged on its lees until shortly prior to bottling.
