About Mike Smith
It is well known that California winemakers produce some of the best wines on Earth, but within that small talented group there is yet a smaller inner circle of winemaking titans that consistently produce truly extraordinary vintages. As one of the Napa Valley’s most decorated vintners, Mike Smith has firmly planted himself in the center of that rare inner circle. An Oregon native, Mike studied under the tutelage of Thomas Rivers Brown and his early career had him contributing at some of the most famous California producers including Schrader, Rivers Marie, Maybach Family, and Outpost. By combining his own innate talent for winemaking with the lessons learned from Thomas, Mike has crafted some of California’s most sought-after and revered wines. Mike crafts a host of spectacular varietals, but his skills shine brightest when it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon.
With sixteen perfect 100 point scores to his name, Mike has twice received the most 100-point scores from Wine Advocate in a single vintage, and he has received numerous professional honors from Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, Vinous, and Wine Spectator. In 2012, three of Mike’s wines were chosen for the prestigious “Legends of Napa Valley Definitive Tasting" as well as have two wines receive the very rare 'Double Hundred Score' where the same wine is rated 100 Points by two separate critics.
His talent of evoking the character and complexity of each vineyard and his refined natural winemaking techniques define some of the world’s greatest vineyards. Mike's hands-on winemaking approach is the heart and soul of the Myriad wines. Every bottle embodies his extreme attention to detail, patience, quiet confidence and vast experience with every one of mother nature’s challenges. His unrelenting commitment to excellence leaves an unmistakable impression on each vintage, and we are delighted to share the fruits of his labor with our members.
About Patiné Cellars
"Friends’ enjoying the moments and experiences of tasting fine wine is how our story began. Individual experiences combining a collective goal to produce world-class wines that are defined by power and grace.
PATINÉ (pa-tee-nay) means to have skated in French; an act that requires both power and grace. Jim’s career as a professional hockey player was defined by the game that requires strength, endurance, structure, balance, elegance, and skill. It is not a surprise that these are the very same qualities that we strive to achieve in the production of our Single Vineyard Designate Pinot Noir. We are committed to sourcing fruit from vineyards that are meticulously farmed in an effort to produce handcrafted world-class wines. We are not only thrilled but also humbled to have our friend and winemaker Mike Smith at the helm of our endeavor."
About Jim Fox
As a Los Angeles Kings’ player, everything was about wins and losses, and even though this intense competition was extremely rewarding, I realized after retiring from the NHL that wine offered me something that was very different, but just as fulfilling. A games’ final score can be so “black and white,” and while wine is scored and rated, it is the many various intangible rewards that I have grown to love. Wine is about the art, the process and the creation, as much as it is about the results. It brings the day-to-day challenge of striving for the best but also offers the artistic element of working alongside Mother Nature. Wine’s intrigue is so encompassing that I literally can’t wait for the next chance to create something special with critically acclaimed winemaker Mike Smith — and taste that next glass of Patiné Pinot Noir!
As co-founder of Patiné Cellars, I actively participate in tasting events as well as working closely with winemaker Mike Smith on all winemaking decisions.
About Dean Nucich
Growing up in the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Dean was introduced to the world class quality of California wines while attending graduate school at the University of Southern California. Dean’s passion for hand crafted premium wine led him to the Napa Valley, where he took time out from his real estate development career, to volunteer for Mike Smith during harvest in 2009. After spending three years working volunteering crush for Mike Smith and countless hours of tasting and talking about wines with friend Jim Fox, the birth of our new project was formed. As co-founder of Patiné Cellars, Dean is responsible for the start-up and day-to-day business operations of the company.
Dean holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, a Master of Real Estate Development from the University of Southern California and an honorary PHD in cleaning tanks and wine making equipment from Carter-Envy, Calistoga, California.________________________________________________________________
