Overview of the Wine
New World? Tyrrell's Wines produced their first vintage in 1864.
Located well in the heart of the Hunter Valley, the winery is better known today for continuing to produce arguably the region's best Semillon.
In 1858, Edward Tyrrell planted his first vines in the Hunter Valley. In 1959, Murray Tyrrell took control of the winery and started producing Tyrrell’s wines under their own labels. Tyrrell’s pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Australia and quickly received international recognition. While remaining a family company, Tyrrell’s has reached out to larger wine markets: in recent years, it has expanded its traditional Hunter Valley vineyard base to other famous vineyard areas in Australia.
Vat 9 Shiraz is sourced from the oldest and best blocks on the Ashmans property, with the oldest vines dating back to 1892. Weinkeller and the Short Flat make up the majority of the Vat 9 blend. All of these blocks feature soils ideal for growing super-premium Shiraz.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
95 Points - James Suckling
Fresh lifted red fruits on the nose and a hint of savory spice from the large format oak. The palate is the perfect balance between power and elegance, with subtle oak enhancing the mid palate which is extended by the fine, clean acid structure. A powerful, structured Vat 9 which still retains its medium bodied pedigree similar to the great vintages of the past.
Wonderfully fresh aromatics such as crushed violets, dragon fruit, elderberries, rosewater and citrus. Medium to full body with fine, beautiful acidity runing through the impressively polished tannins. While the floral flavors dominate, this isn’t short on delicious blue fruits. It finishes long, tangy and chewy.
