Overview of the Wine
Wines defined by place, style and time. In the southwest corner of Sta. Rita Hills AVA lies a rugged, windswept, coastal vineyard, called The Hilt Estate; estate grower producer of stunning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reflective of this dynamic corner of California.
Pushing the limits; in the farthest southwest reach of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA is home to Radian & Bentrock Vineyards, these vineyards dictate The Hilt style.
The numerous microclimates and unique soils provide a multilayered backdrop to create 3 unique expressions: Estate, The Guards, and Single Vineyards.
In 2014, Matt Dees, Ruben Solorzano & team took on operation and farming of Radian and Bentrock Vineyards and shifted to precise sustainable & organic farming to transform and revitalize the soil.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
At this stage, this wine is completely driven by its strong core of minerality and the electricity generated by its mouthwatering acidity. Out of the bottle it immediately displays notes of baked apple, lime zest, honey, chamomile and classic chardonnay flintiness. A stony coolness from the combination of the old vines and the stainless ferments brings a level of restraint and austerity that adds elegance to the layers that quickly build up on the palate. Fruit density from the low yielding vines and toasty notes from the barrel ferments add richness and length. For a cool climate chardonnay it displays remarkable amounts of fruit alongside the expected notes of citrus, stone and oyster shell brininess. A wine of unusual depth, elegance, tension and balance, the 2010 Hilt Old Guard Chardonnay drinks exceptionally well today, but should be at its best with a few years in the cellar
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Lemon, white flowers, spices, apples and a subtle hint of oak wrap around the palate in the 2010 Chardonnay Old Guard. This is an utterly impeccable, beautifully balanced Chardonnay oozing with class and pedigree. The layered, resonant finish rounds things out in style. The 2010 is 55% Sanford & Benedict and 45% Solomon Hills fruit aged 50% in neutral oak, 25% in new oak and 25% in stainless steel.
