TOP FIND RATING: Tasting wine for a living, I see a sameness in many Cabernet based wines in Napa - and I think of that as a compliment. But here, in the hands of Anna Monticelli - I see something more interesting. This appeals to my belief that Mountain Fruit is more interesting - deeper, darker, denser... and at this price you tend not to have massive expectations... I have tasted $100 wines that do not deliver this much "stuffing" - I even think this wine exceeds the goals of the producer... 2017 is that kind of a vintage... I would buy this buy the case if you like the price... I don't think it will be around for long and we have a great price because I want MERCHANT OF WINE to be a huge customer for this wine.

Overview of the Wine
Winemaker Anna Monticelli (who was assistant winemaker at Bryant Family for 4 years) has brought a Cab that falls in line with the quality of its predecessor! The idea for creating the Stack House label came from Anna and Mario Monticelli’s weekly poker parties with their friends. As it typically happens in Napa Valley, all the players were somehow involved in the wine industry so it became Texas Hold Em poker and wine tasting.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley comes mainly from declassified mountain fruit. It is made up of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, aged 20 months in 85% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features bombastic notes of black cherries, crème de cassis and warm plums with touches of cedar chest, pencil lead, menthol and forest floor. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, it has bold freshness and tons of black fruit layers, finishing on a spicy note. 5,000 cases made.

Made by Anna Monticelli, the 2017 Stack House Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. Coming 90% from mountain fruit and brought up in 85% new French oak, it's one of the best values in the vintage and has beautiful cassis, toasted spice, gravelly earth, and hints of graphite. It's beautifully done, medium to full-bodied, and textured, and drinks way above its price point. Anna commented that this was the finest vintage of this cuvée she’s made.
