About The Producer
Prager Winery & Port Works was founded in 1979 by Jim Prager, who, because of his love of wine, pulled stakes in Southern California, packed up his wife and seven children, and moved to Napa Valley. He made his first wines in 1980 – chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel – and also made a late harvest cabernet, which was named Noble Companion. Their property is historic – once a part of the John Thomann Winery and Distillery (now Sutter Home). The carriage house on site dates from 1865. The winery including barrels and tanks is as the Pragers say, “located in the shadow, directly behind Sutter Home” (and behind the Prager tasting room).
Royal Escort is the flagship wine, made entirely from petite sirah grapes, and it was created by what many might term almost an accident. In 1982, a grower had trouble selling his petite sirah crop and asked Jim Prager to buy the grapes. “Dad saw the quality (of the grapes) and we’ve made it ever since,” Peter Prager said. “We didn’t set out to make port from petite sirah — it just happened.”

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
The deep rich garnet color lends to a fresh pressed berry bouquet, followed by ripe cherries on the palate.
“These are not (only) dessert wines,” Prager said. “Even the Federal government calls them ‘dessert’ wines, but ports are for after dessert, and white ports are an aperitif. Ports are extremely versatile.” That’s what the new organization needs to tell the public, he said.
