About the Producer
"Friends’ enjoying the moments and experiences of tasting fine wine is how our story began. Individual experiences combining a collective goal to produce world-class wines that are defined by power and grace.
PATINÉ (pa-tee-nay) means to have skated in French; an act that requires both power and grace. Jim’s career as a professional hockey player was defined by the game that requires strength, endurance, structure, balance, elegance, and skill. It is not a surprise that these are the very same qualities that we strive to achieve in the production of our Single Vineyard Designate Pinot Noir. We are committed to sourcing fruit from vineyards that are meticulously farmed in an effort to produce handcrafted world-class wines. We are not only thrilled but also humbled to have our friend and winemaker Mike Smith at the helm of our endeavor."
Overview of the Wine
As part of the Sonoma Coast AVA, Sun Chase Vineyard peers above the Gap’s Crown Vineyard perched on a Southwest facing hillside at an elevation between 900’ and 1400’ feet. Located where the Petaluma Wind Gap meets Sonoma Mountain allows Mother Nature to draw invigorating winds and cooling fog from the coast toward the San Pablo Bay.
Early morning fog rolls in to provide a cool cover until the sun breaks through for a short term warming influence and in the late afternoon the cooling winds return. Greatly influenced by these cool ocean breezes and sitting above the fog line, these winds reduce heat stress on the vines, which allows for slow and even maturation of the fruit. These factors combine for balanced fruit, crisp minerality, producing a rich Pinot Noir. Sun Chase has become increasingly popular with high end Pinot Noir producers and is one of the most sought after vineyards in the Petaluma Gap.
About the Vintage
Our goal is to create a wine that showcases the varietal’s exceptional character in this region. The 2018 vintage highlights the beautiful acidity and freshness that this vineyard produces year after year. The fruit is so pure yet seamlessly balanced allowing the distinctive minerality to shine. This wine is a beautiful display of concentrated red fruit flavors with an incredibly long finish. Sun Chase Vineyard is situated on the Southeastern edge of the Sonoma Coast appellation at 800 ft elevation. Considered one of the top five vineyards in Sonoma County, Sun Chase consistently produces wines of great depth and complexity. The rocky hillside soils of this hillside gem are derived from volcanic parent material known as basalt which has a low concentration of magnesium but very rich in minerals which is ideal for cultivating premium Pinot Noir grapes.
