Overview of the Wine
The property is located five miles northwest of St. Helena at the top of Spring Mountain. In the last half of the 19th century it was a vineyard, but was allowed to return to forest around the turn of the century. We still find old redwood grape stakes and even a few old zinfandel vines that survive under the large Douglas fir trees that surround our home. One vine near the house produces one or two clusters of grapes a year that are put into our Merlot blend for good luck. The purchase of this raw land was the beginning of an odyssey that is ongoing, ever changing, but with one goal—to grow the best grapes possible and make a wine that reflects the terroir of our vineyard.

An iconic Spring Mountain Merlot, and one that exudes a greatness that is etched in history.  Paloma made a pivotal statement in 2003, when their ’01 Merlot ranked as the #1 wine in the world on the Wine Spectator Top 100.  This was the first Domestic Merlot in history to clinch the number 1 spot.  The newly released 2013 Merlot gives you one of those light-bulb-moments as to how great Merlot can be from this revered Mountain, with its exceptional set of aromas, lined with vivid plum, black cherries, melted chocolate and roasted espresso… Paloma still reigns as one of the top Merlots produced in Napa Valley.

This wine is absolutely irresistible right now and opens up beautifully in glass, revealing new and interesting components with each swirl of the glass.  This is the epitome of Mountain grown Merlot…

Tasting Notes
Rising from a vintage that Robert Parker wrote “may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years,” Paloma’s 2013 Merlot bears a profound core of fruit, layered in Chinese black tea, muddled blackberries, sweet cocoa and subtle spice box.

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is a strong effort from Paloma that has made its reputation for ripe, sexy, full-bodied Merlots. This wine exhibits plenty of plum, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, mocha and coffee bean in a lush, delicious and opulently textured style. It is drinking beautifully already and will continue to evolve for another decade or more. (RP)

Wine Spectator
Supple and sleek, with an elegant sense of complexity and accents of red currant, dark chocolate and mineral that linger.
