Overview of the Wine
A long lasting bond unites the Mazzei family with Tuscany and wines since the XI century.
Ser Lapo Mazzei is the author of the first known document to use the "Chianti" denomination in 1398; in 1435, when his granddaughter Madonna Smeralda Mazzei married Piero di Agnolo da Fonterutoli, the holding became part of the family's estate. Since then, for 24 generations, the Mazzei family produces wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, which even after its recent expansion still remains the beating heart of the company.
Philip, who enjoyed calling himself a "Citizen of the World", befriended Franklin, Adams, Washington, and Jefferson; the latter invited him to introduce vine growing in Monticello, Virginia.
Filippo inspired Jefferson with the idea that "All men are by nature equally free and independent".
In his book A Nation of Immigrants, John F. Kennedy himself acknowledges that "The great doctrine 'All men are created equal', incorporated in the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Filippo Mazzei, an Italian patriot and dear friend of Jefferson".
In the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano and next to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Belguardo Estate is one of the most important businesses in the region.
Purchased by the Mazzei family in the middle of the 90's, the property covers an overall area of 70 hectares, half of which is devoted to special viewyards.
A very special terroir, which is the result of many years of research, and on which an intense vineyard replanting program was started immediately after the purchase with a precise choice of the varietals and clones.

94 Points - Ian Blackburn, WineLA.com
When released, this more difficult and more classic vintage received 90 and 91 points scores. But with 5+ years in age.. the wine is so refined, balanced and made with obvious quality... from the packaging to the punctuated perfume in the glass... this is 94 points all day long and you will LOVE the state of this wine.
91 Points - James Suckling
A tighter Ser Lapo Chianti Classico with nut, berries and cherries. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Delicious finish.
90 Points - Wine Spectator
A well-balanced red, with cherry, almond, leather and underbrush flavors offsetting the lightly chewy tannins, this shows fine length and complexity. Drink now through 2022.
90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is a lovely wine that does a great job with the presumably reduced fruit selection available in this challenging vintage. This is a single-vineyard blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. The wine shows red fruit, spice, tobacco and dried cherry over a smooth and silky mouthfeel. It would make a fitting companion to fire-grilled T-bone steak.
