About the Winemaker
Every morning, when the vines are arousing from their slumber, the “inhabitants” of Calon take possession of the place, and the estate turns into a village. Fifty or so people work here: vineyard workers, tractor drivers, an administrative team, the cellar crew, agricultural engineers, hospitality men and women. People from Saint-Estèphe of course, but also Médocains, Bordelais, as well as one or two talents that have come from abroad to take part in the Calon Ségur project.
When Jean-Pierre Denis purchased the estate on behalf of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group, it was both a decision made from the heart and a carefully thought-through act. He had been interested in wine since the age of 35 -a late but sincere and thorough conversion. He was as much a collector as a wine lover and held a preference for the wines of Bordeaux.
Vincent Millet joined Calon Ségur in 2006 as an estate manager and is taking on the managing direction upon himself now. Originating from Neuilly-sur-Seine he never imagined that one day he would be spending most of his time in the middle of grape vines. However, it was his encounter with oenology, when he was studying neuro-biology, which changed his life.
About the Wine
The estate’s Second Wine offers a different interpretation of the Calon terroir. With an average of 75% Merlot in the blends, Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is totally distinct from the First Wine. “It benefits from a true expression of its own”, underlines Vincent Millet. “The plots are separated out from the beginning.” Le Marquis de Calon Ségur provides immediate enjoyment, warmth and a velvety texture. It is carefully aged generally for 17 months in oak barrels, a third of which are new. Deliciously easy-drinking, silky and expressive, its charm comes to the fore, while at the same time bringing to our minds the elegance of the Grand Vin.

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast
This second wine of Calon Ségur is beautifully proportioned. It is fruity with rich tannins. At the same time, the crisp fruit of the vintage gives a lift to the deep concentration. Let the wine develop over several years. (RV)
92 Points - Vinous
A rich, flamboyant wine, the 2014 Marquis de Calon Ségur is just as exotic from bottle as it was from barrel back in early 2015. A host of inky blue and purplish-hued stone fruit, lavender, spice, tobacco and leather are pushed forward. The wine is endowed with serious fruit intensity, but there is plenty of supporting tannin as well. A sleeper for the vintage, the 2014 Marquis de Calon Ségur has enough depth and pedigree to develop beautifully for years.
92 Points - James Suckling
Blackberry, mushroom and flower aromas follow through to a full to medium body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Like the hints of bitter oranges.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur 2014 is a blend of 67% Merlot (now including young vines planted in front of the château by Vincent Millet and the late Mme. Gasqueton) and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon. Because of the high alcohol content of the Merlot vines, that average alcohol level comes in at 14.7%. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a rich, almost decadent bouquet with crème de cassis and blueberry jam, a touch of warmth coming from the alcohol. This is very heady within the context of the vintage. The palate is full-bodied, rich and powerful with layers of super-ripe Merlot fruit: fleshy in the mouth, almost ravishing with a very sweet finish that needs to find more precision and focus. It's a rare example of a blockbuster deuxième vin!
This has a core of cassis and fleshy plum fruit, offset by a brisk iron note and a mouthwatering bay accent. Everything pulls together on the finish, which is relatively open-knit in style.
