Overview of the Wine
With more than 2000 years of winemaking history, Colli Orientali is the pinnacle of quality wine in Friuli Venezia Giulia, both white and red.
Of the two hillside regions of Friuli, Colli Orientali is the most diverse. Various aspects to the sun and numerous microclimates render wines of character that communicate terroir with exciting variations on similar themes.
The Bastianich winery, founded in 1997, strives to understand the history and culture of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and take it to a new level. They create unique wines that speak of place but, at the same time, show remarkable power and balance. Vespa Bianco and Vespa Rosso are named after the ever-present wasps attracted to ripe grapes. These blends are made in an area known for single-varietal wines, shifting the focus from the grape to the terroir. Calabrone, which means hornet, is an estate reserve red blend made only in the best vintages with hand-destemmed, partially dried fruit, and is released 5 years after the vintage. Native varieties, such as Tocai Friulano, are unblended to showcase the uniqueness of the grape. The pinnacle of this being Tocai Plus, a particularly complex example made with late-harvest and dried fruit from a single-vineyard of 60 year-old vines.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
2018: Pinot Grigio is a grape particularly at home in northeast Italy. Aromatic, layered and bright, this 100% Pinot Grigio opens with a tropical flourish on the nose and a striking straw yellow color. Full, smooth and very well balanced, notes of green apple, juicy Bartlett pear and fresh-cut citrus fill the palate, with a crisp mineral edge and hints of honey and melon on the long finish.
2019: Pinot Grigio from Pinot Grigio grapes, fermented as a white wine. It has an intense straw-yellow color; its aroma is intense, full and fruity, with excellent persistence. Its taste is dry, velvety, and particularly well-orchestrated for its full body.
To be paired with fish soups, chargrilled seafood and various dishes based on field mushrooms and porcini mushrooms. This wine is wonderful with squid ink lasagnette pasta and crayfish sauce.

A delicious pinot grigio with cooked apples and honey and hints lemon rind, following through to a medium body. Dried-apple and pineapple character at the finish.

Aromas of Alpine herb, white spring flower and ripe orchard fruit mingle together in the glass. Tangy and rounded, the savory palate boasts intense flavor and finesse, doling out ripe yellow pear, white peach and a hint of green melon alongside fresh acidity.

A lovely, creamy white with pineapple and mango character, as well as crushed-stone undertones. It’s medium-bodied, fruity and delicious.
