Overview of the Wine
J.C. Somers is the collaboration between Jay Christopher Somers and his longtime partner and wife Ronda Newell-Somers. The label displays the New Moon which signifies a new phase in their winemaking adventures. After founding and developing the J. Christopher brand starting in 1996, they are returning to their roots producing small quantities of focused, elegant, and terroir-driven wines made from the best sites in the Willamette Valley.

Jay and Ronda a member of The Deep Roots Coalition (DRC), which is an advocacy group for the production of wine sourced exclusively from non-irrigated vineyards. The wineries in this group share a vision regarding viticulture, winemaking and long-term viability of Oregon wine. They feel that vineyards must be dry farmed, and that it is the non-irrigated vines that work hardest to produce fruit that maximizes the true terroir. With fruit sources and skill that rival the best of Oregon, Jay Somers is a winemaker to watch.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Croft Vineyard is truly one of the top white wine vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. The vineyard is located southwest of the Eola Hills near the town of Monmouth. The organically farmed Croft Vineyard is in the foothills of the coast range and grown in ancient marine sediment soils. The vineyard is dry farmed. Owned by Chancy and Toni Croft and farmed by Lee Croft, Jay Somers has been working with the Sauvignon Blanc since 1999. The 2004 Croft Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc he made won best white wine of the year in Sunset Magazine and has been a little bit of a cult wine ever since. Jay works with 1 acre of the Clone 1 Sauvignon Blanc.

92 Point Review by Ian Blackburn:
Somers has always captured a wonderful energy around Sauvignon Blanc. (perhaps the best in Oregon). Nose is beautiful; floral, kaffir lime and candied lemon peal, with a nice daft earth note.  Mouth has both raciness (acidity) and kiss of roundness (texture and body).  Not as aromatic and spirited as New Zealand but also not green and bitter like is often found in California; and not oaky and overly MLF'ed like many a Bordeaux Blanc... right down left of center leaning on Sancerre with a unique Oregon stance.  Color 14, Aroma 23.5, Body 22.5 Overall 32/35 = 92 Points
