Overview of the Wine
Hudson Ranch lies in Napa Valley’s Carneros District, one of the finest winegrowing regions in the world. The cooling breezes off the Bay of San Francisco allow the grapes a longer hang time in which to develop flavor and intensity, without sacrificing acidity and true balance.
For forty years Hudson has foraged heritage selections of chardonnay from historic vineyards throughout California. These carefully chosen selections have been propagated on our ranch in an effort to honor diversity. We prize these grapes for their intense mineralogy and distinctive flavor. We feel our wines represent the most honest representation of our site, intent and endeavor.
Grape / Blend
Napa Valley, California
The Hudson’s 2018 Chardonnay is sensational, offering richness and depth balanced by Burgundian acidity and minerality. Golden hues showcase energetic aromas of fresh lemon zest, toasted almonds, wet graphite and toasty caramel, leading into a fresh palate with medium body marked by a saline quality which is classic Hudson. Flavors consist of roasted corn, macadamia nuts and Maldon sea salt. The fruit was picked by hand at night, then whole cluster pressed, and barrel fermented in 60% new French oak. The wine was stirred regularly on the lees, then settled and bottled unfiltered and unfined after 14 months. The result is a richly layered, well-structured Chardonnay that showcases all of the qualities found in the sought-after wines from Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy.
96+ Points - Robert Parker
Produced from the “Shot Wente” heritage selection clone and all naturally fermented in French oak, 85% new, where it was aged for 12 months, the Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard reveals intense grapefruit, pineapple and honeysuckle notes with hints of brioche, ginger and shaved almonds. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with spicy, tropical fruit flavors, framed by plenty of freshness and a satiny texture, finishing with great length and depth...This famous vineyard in Carneros was first started by the Hudson family in 1981. These are some of the strongest wines I have yet tasted from them, thanks to winemaker Christopher Vandendriessche and Ace consultant John Kongsgaard."
