Overview of the Wine
Weingut Franz Hirtzberger was founded by the senior Franz Hirtzberger and is now run by his son, also named Franz. Hirtzberger is one the elite producers in the Wachau that combines a long family history in the region of five generations, excellent wine growing and winemaking intuition and skill, and maybe the most important aspect is the stunning array of vineyard sites in their family holdings: Singerriedel, Honivogl, Axpoint, Hochrain, Setzberg, Steinporz, Kirchweg, Donaugarten, Rotes Tor, Pluris, and Schlossgarten. Those are indeed as one might say “The Family Jewels” and one of the best collections of vineyard sites by any Wachau Weingut.

Franz Hirtzberger and family reside in a 600 year old house at the base of the famed Singerriedl vineyard. The winery is located in hilly Spitz, at the western end of the Wachau, as the Danube snakes down from the mountains. The cool air of this area reinforces the minerality and delicacy of Hirtzberger's wines. The family is a pillar of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus organization that preserves the quality of the zones wines zone– Franz’s father was a founder and today Franz is the President. The Hirtzberger winemaking philosophy is simple: closely managed vineyards, natural yeasts, fermentation in stainless steel, aging in large oak for Gruner Veltliner and acacia for Riesling.

Tasting Notes
Medium yellow-green, silver reflections. Attractive yellow tropical fruit tank, delicate smoky minerality, backed by hints of papaya and passion fruit. Substance-rich, good complexity, ripe stone fruit nuances, fine acid curve, blossom honey in the reverberation, secure development potential, salty aftertaste.

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Wonderfully concentrated notes of ripe mirabelle plums open up on the nose. There also is a heady lemon note. The palate is rich with the same fleshy ripe fruit but has a fault line of zesty orange at its core that provides focus and seems to illuminate clouds of ripe aromatic citrus at every turn. This shimmers with tangerine and clementine. The body is immensely concentrated but has total direction and drive. Enjoy 2020–2040.
