Overview of the Wine

Located about a five minute drive outside the village of Châteauneuf-duPape along the road which leads to Courthézon you will find Château de Vaudieu. It is one of three 18th century Châteaux located in the appellation, tucked into a small valley surrounded by hills and plateau. It is at the intersection of several major terroirs: sandy soils to the north, along a border it shares with Château Rayas, pale limestone and clays centered around a forested hillock, and two large plateaux of galets over red clay soils. In total there are 70 hectares within one contiguous estate – something very rare in the appellation.

Laurent, and his brother Julien, are the grandsons of Gabriel Meffre. Through their mother, Sylvette, they inherited several properties when Gabriel died in 1987 including Château de Vaudieu, and Domaine des Bosquets in Gigondas. The estate had a great reputation during the 19th century exporting its wines all over Europe but it had fallen into disrepair by the time that Gabriel purchased it in 1955. At that time there were only about 25 hectares of vines which Gabriel expanded to nearly the current size of 70 hectares. In the replanting he included a very high proportion of white varieties equaling about 1/7 of the total plantings including a vineyard of Grenache Blanc on the highest part of the property.

Val de Dieu, the name of the valley located in the heart of Châteauneufdu-Pape and just to the east of the famed castle itself lends its name to the estate, Château de Vaudieu, as well as the cuvée made from the vines that are grown in this narrow valley. Val de Dieu starts near the entrance to the property where the heavier sandy clay, and more drought resistant soils benefit the growing of Mourvedre. It continues up a gentle rise where sandy limestone soils are planted with Syrah before cresting a gentle hill of decomposed sandstone soils and the Grenache vines planted in them. By combining these three varieties, each grown on terroirs suitable for their full expression, and each vinified to bring out their potential, Val de Dieu represents both the complexity of the site as well as the historical importance of the three main grape varieties of the region.

Tasting Notes

An uncompromising, philosopher's wine. This is a wine of great depth, powerful, dense and well bred that can be laid down for many years.

95 Points - Wine Spectator

This has the fleshy, pure and driven vintage profile of cassis and raspberry running right down the middle, with an amped-up finish of roasted apple wood, graphite and ganache notes providing a thumping bass line. Needs a little more time to knit fully, but that won’t be a problem. (JM)

93-95 Points - Vinous

Brilliant ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed raspberry, boysenberry and rose pastille scents are complemented by hints of cola, rhubarb and peppery spices. Palate-staining red and blue fruit flavors show impressive power as well as vivacity thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. The floral quality comes back emphatically on a very long, sappy finish shaped by smooth tannins. This wine's urgency and power are superb, as is its balance. (JR)

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Val de Dieu (60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre) offers a similar style, with notes of caramelized raspberries, spice-box, dried garrigue and hints of vanilla. Elegant, full-bodied and utterly seamless on the palate, it has ripe, sweet tannin and a great finish. Like the tradition, it's a more elegant, silky style of wine that's already a joy to drink. This is another great lineup from Chateau de Vaudieu, who have risen to the top of the heap recently. They make a perfumed, elegant style of wine, and have started releasing numerous single parcel wine from vines all located around the estate. (JebDunnuck.com)  (10/2017)

94 Points-  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A traditional blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre and aged predominantly in demi-muids, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Val de Dieu is richly tannic yet plush, marked by its stay in oak. Vanilla and baking spices abound, yet they blend readily with the mixed-berry fruit and velvety texture. It's approachable now if you're partial to vanilla, berries and cream, but I expect it to develop some more savory characters within a few years. (JC) (10/2017)
