Overview of the Wine

“I first came to Maury in 2006, and fell in love with this region, and bought vineyards. Maury was first dedicated to sweet wines. I have supported the development of the dry wine in this region, as the quality of the red dry wine is absolutely fantastic here. Condemned to be torn by the land

consolidation plan, I was able to save 6 hectares of very old vines close to 100 years. After being

oppressed and endangered, Courier is the first message, the first expression of this rescue of

vineyards. These vines, up to 100 years old, produce less than 10 Hl per Ha. Hand crafted, this limited 135 cases production of Courier is aged in large barrels for 36 months to bring out the pure expression of the unique Maury terroir and it’s incredible microclimate. This wine is a pure jewel, a miracle.”

Hand crafted from two schist laden vineyards with extremely small yields (1/4 ton per acre), this limited 224 case production of 100 year old Carignan and 70 year old Grenache is aged in large barrels for 36 months to bring out the pure expression of the unique Maury terroir and it’s incredible microclimate.

This is a study of terroir…what does SCHIST do to the wine???

To say, "it smells like schist," is a compliment. Just take a look at this vineyard! Some vines are 80 year old plantings. Macerated cherry, almost cherries flambé! Damson plums, violets and medieval banquet on the nose.

30 minutes in, the fruit sweetness had subsided, the smell of gravel started to materialize, and a meaty savory thing was evolving as well as Indian curried beef, Indian spices, and schist….a really cool journey.

This wine will rock with BBQ and smoked meats but also will pair beautifully with Asian-prepped meats (fish, chicken and red), lamb, beef, pork, and anything with tomatoes and cheese.

Co-fermented 70% Grenache (70 year old) and 30% Carignan (90 year old) for 3 years in large barrels. Approaching a decade in age, this is what The Good SCHIST smells like.

92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck

Much more open, seamless and sexy than the 2010 bottling, the 2011 Cotes Catalanes has fabulous dark fruits, kirsch, chocolate, spice and peeper to go with a full bodied, sweetly fruited feel on the palate. There are roughly 350 cases of this produced, and it’s a thoroughly enjoyable Roussillon to drink over the coming 7-8 years.
