Overview of the Wine
Situated in the province of Siena where the renown area of "Brunello di Montalcino" is found, Castiglion del Bosco encompasses approximately 4,450 acres of land, 125 of which are vineyards with plans to plant 15 more acres. The farm is located between the historic towns of Buonconvento and Montalcino. Given the truly magnificent geographical position of the estate, perched on a hill looking down onto the surrounding valleys, exposure is optimal resulting in wines of excellent quality. These are very exciting wines, new and classic at the same time.

Castiglion del Bosco was the first to produce and bottle Brunello di Montalcino in the sixties and today represents one of the most important properties of this region. Plans are currently underway to produce new wines and expand the existing cellar. This estate prides itself on the highest level of quality combined with respect for tradition. Claudio Basla, from Altesino, also consults at Castiglion del Bosco insuring the same levels of quality that we have always enjoyed from that estate.

Rosso Gauggiole Cru is a young, refreshing sangiovese. It is the cherry-pick of grapes from different parcels of one single vineyard and it is the highest expression of the area’s potential, emphasizing the finesse that Castiglion del Bosco strives to bestow upon its finest wines. The name derives from the location of the vineyards, historically titled after the farmstead of the same name. Soils in this are fresh and not overly clayey, and the northeast exposure mitigates the power and heat that are typical of vineyards.

Both winter and spring were mild in 2016, contributing to early budding, and remarkable vegetation for the vines. Summer was cool and mild, therefore ripening process was slower and very balanced. This excellent vintage shows ripe tannins, rich colors, and very good acidity. Harvest started slightly earlier than usual, but it was completed in mid-October, which is typical in the best and most celebrated vintages of Montalcino. The ripeness of the grapes brought great balance, and we can expect rich wines with outstanding elegance.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
This excellent vintage shows ripe tannins, rich colors, and very good acidity. A ruby red hue and delicate bouquet announce a remarkably luscious wine, well-balanced and firmly structured, with a long-lingering finish.

93 - James Suckling
Shows some really good ripeness on the nose with glazed cherries, dried red plums and caramelized orange peel. Very generous on the palate with round and attractive tannins, framing notes of Christmas cake and chocolate-coated plums.
