About The Producer
Ramón Castaño Santa, fundador de Bodegas Castaño, started making his first wines in bulk back in 1950. Pioneer in the use of the Monastrell grape, he extended the family heritage with the purchase of new vineyard sites. With the gradual incorporation of their three children, Ramón, Juan Pedro and Daniel Castaño, the true innovation started and with it, the expansion to international markets.
Two winemaking cellars, fully equipped with stainless steel tanks for a correct maceration process at controlled temperatures. An underground oak barrel-ageing cellar with temperatura and humidity control, and a warehouse with the appropriate light and conditions to provide the wine bottles with their final rest before their release to the world.
Overview of the Wine
The 2015 Hécula is pure old-vine Monastrell from dry-farmed, head-pruned vineyards on limestone soils within their Las Gruesas and Pozuelo estates in the higher part of the Yecla appellation. Different plots are fermented differently, and the wine aged for an average of six months in barrique. Stylistically, this is somewhere between the floral Monastrell and the more classic Casa Carmela, revamped, with a new image and with a cleaner nose and even some shy flowers. It's higher pitched than the more tarry Casa Carmela (even if I'm comparing different vintages) but not as much as the Monastrell and with less extraction and tannins than in the past. The palate is polished with some fine-grained tannins. 144,000 bottles produced.
Monastrell is the main red variety within our Appellation of Origin Yecla, an ideal habitat that allows it to express itself at its best, intensity, colour, body, structure and silkiness. A unique grape variety for its qualities to create wines with a Mediterranean and mineral character.
The beginning of the harvest takes place with the reception of the beautifully ripen white grape varieties, followed with the ealier red grapes during the month of September. The end of harvest is always marked by Monastrell, the one with the longest vegetal cycle, that takes its dueful time to mature.
Our harvest process is fully manual, which helps us achieve an optimum state of the grapes when received in the winery and thus, a better quality for our wines.
Quality has always been the main goal and therefore, we have implemented ISO9001 and ISO14001 on quality and environmental management systems, while we have also improved the technical means in the different stages of production (vinification, stabilization, bottling and ageing). Organic and integrated farming systems have also been incorporated with success, as our land is ideal for sustainable and environment-friendly practices free from chemicals

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
The 2015 Hecula shows an intense and shiny cherry red color. On the nose, it blooms pleasant ripe red fruit aromas, sweet spices. It has very elegant and integrated wooden notes that do not cover its intense fruitiness. It is well-balanced, fresh, with elegant soft tannins and a good acidity. Long and very well structured.
