Alphonse Mellot, La Moussière Sancerre Blanc, Loire Valley, France, 2020
Overview of the Wine
As far back as the XVI century, in 1513 to be exact, the local records mention the MELLOT family, whose life even at that time was governed by the seasons of the vine and the production of wines of excellent quality. The Mellot family, vinegrowers and wine merchants, was again mentioned during the siege of the town. They pursued their patient labours and continued to gain recognition because César Mellot was appointed as Wine Advisor to Louis XIV in 1698.
At the beginning of the XIX century, ALPHONSE MELLOT founded a tavern in Sancerre where one could savour the local wines and so began a flourishing trade that was to continue. In 1881 he was granted a licence to ship his wine throughout France and all over the World. This marked the beginning of a pacific conquest which has been pursued and developed by the family business from father to son ever since, with the eldest son continuing to bear the name of the Founder Alphonse.
Today, this century old winemaking tradition is perpetuated by Alphonse MELLOT, father and son, the 18th and 19th to bear the name.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
La Moussiere is the crown jewel cuvee of this estate. Its unique fruitfulness and clarity truly define the style of an Alphonse Mellot. Voluptuous floral notes on the nose envelop the palate with a touch of white flowers and citrus; leaving a crisp refreshing finish.
We are the only estate in Sancerrois to have the prestigious "hors concours" (beyond competition) distinction bestowed upon us, and the La Moussière vineyard is our cornerstone. Its terroirs, precious gifts from generations past, lie at the very heart of the Sancerre appellation. La Moussière is the estates's flagship cuvee, its richness, energy and precision defining the Alphonse Mellot style.
92 Points - Decanter
Alphonse Mellot is based in the heart of the town of Sancerre. La Moussière is a large parcel of vines planted on marls overlaying Kimmeridgian limestone to the west of the town. The domaine is certified both organic and biodynamic. Grapes are hand-picked and 50% is vinified in new barrels and the rest in vats. Wine is matured on fine lees for 7-8 months. The 2020 is a very rich, ripe, powerful and complex with a long finish. Still young with considerable potential to age. Pair with rich fish dishes.
