There is pulp, there is very soft and spicy fruit, there is fruit of excellent power and above all chromatic vigor in this vivid purple sparkling wine. Its visual and therefore olfactory mantle is impenetrable and deep, with the alcohol it supports, which majestically pushes its fully ripe and intensely spiced fruit mass. The perfume is a mix of ripe red fruits, accompanied by a note of freshness, enhanced by the bubbles. In the mouth the perlage returns to tickle the tongue. A ripe plum compote that sparkling spirits light up on the eucalyptus veins, the fruit pulp that gently pushes it to the black cherry and cassis. A fruit of great extractive qualities, powerful, persistent, with excellent roundness in its creamy foam. The tale begins with Cleto Chiarli, the proprietor of the Modena restaurant Osteria dell’Artigliere in the mid-1800s. As was common for restaurateurs and innkeepers in those days, Chiarli made his own wine to sell at the osteria. Naturally, the wine was made from Lambrusco, the area’s primary grape variety, and it was well-received by customers—so much so that in 1860 Chiarli was emboldened to found Emilia Romagna’s first wine-producing company, the Cantina Cleto Chiarli.

By the turn of the 21st century, the business was in the hands of Cleto Chiarli's great-grandsons Mauro and Anselmo Chiarli, and they decided to move to a new production center that would focus on more or an artisanal, quality-driven style. In 2002, they began building a new facility to produce a higher-end line of Lambrusco wines using carefully selected, estate-grown grapes and state-of-the-art equipment. Sourced from the farm’s old vines, Marco’s Lambrusco is harvested by hand before undergoing natural fermentation in stainless steel and carbonation via the Charmat method. Inky in the glass with a bright purple fizz, it leads with a nose of Concord grape soda, cranberry and currant, smoked prosciutto, bitter cocoa and sweet green herbs. In the mouth, sweet-tart note driven forth by a ripping backbone of acidity keeps those big, juicy flavors of black berry and cherry on the straight-and-narrow, with a lovely bitter-herbal edge providing further balance to the sweetness of fruit.

Product size: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0275/0441/0666/files/La_Piana_Mirco_Gianaroli_Lambrusco_Grasparossa_di_Castelvetro_Secco_Emilia-Romagna_Italy_NV.jpg?v=1762883837
vigneto-saetti-lambrusco-salamino-rosso-viola-emilia-romagna-italy-2023
Vigneto Saetti Lambrusco Salamino "Rosso Viola," Emilia-Romagna, Italy, 2023

Overview of the Wine
Luciano Saetti makes stunning, evocative Lambrusco just outside of Modena. He is of a generation that decided to return to traditional methods and eschew modern practices that contributed to Lambrusco's poor reputation. The 2.8 hectares of vines he works were planted by his family in 1964. Prior to his taking over, they sold off most of their fruit to the local coop.

Luciano, however, thought that they could do better and so after a successful first career as an egg distributor in Modena, he founded Vigneto Saetti in 1998. He saw the value in the family’s old vines of a particular local strain of the Lambrusco grape called Salamino di Santa Croce. It’s thick-skinned, tight-bunched, darker-colored and higher in natural acidity than some other more common varieties of Lambrusco.

He works completely organically (certified) in order to not upset the natural harmony of the vineyard. Everything is meticulously sorted and hand harvested. Grapes are destemmed and crushed in the vines to maintain freshness. Importantly, the wines undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle. This process had become increasingly rare in the region because many producers were seduced by modern technology associated with the charmat method which allowed for easier production of sparkling wine. Saetti’s second fermentation is initiated by the addition of fresh grape must in the spring following the vintage, and is fermented to dryness. The bottles are riddled and disgorged by hand.

Over the years, as Luciano gained better understanding of the vines and noticed the quality of fruit improve, the estate made the decision in 2007 to forgo the use of sulfur at any point in the vinification process.

For Luciano: “Producing wine without the help of chemical preservatives cannot be identified simply as an alternative winemaking method, but it becomes a real production philosophy, which requires a lot of dedication, patience and above all passion. The absence of sulfur dioxide is recognized at the first sip, through the fragrance of the fruits in the glass, you can perceive the flavor of the freshly picked bunch, the roughness and bitterness of the skin immediately reached by the sweetness of its pulp.”

We are thrilled to be working with Luciano, a humble dedicated winemaker.

COOL FACT: The label is made of fabric and hand applied. This is a great iteration of Lambrusco - Highly recommended

Winemaker
Luciano Saetti

Grape / Blend
100% Lambrusco Salamino

Origin
Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Tasting Notes
100% Lambrusco Salamino (a particular sub-variety of Lambrusco known for thick skins, dark color, high acidity and tight bunches).
