Overview of the Wine
For the better part of the last 19 years Anthony Biagi has been crafting wines in Napa Valley for Paraduxx, Neal Family Vineyards, PlumpJack, and Cade Wineries and currently for Hourglass, Sinegal Estate, and Amici. Following his parent’s sage advice “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life,” he finds himself extremely fortunate that he has been able to do what he loves from the day he graduated from college. Following a dream he set decades ago, Anthony founded Patria (homeland) in 2013 with Kimberly Jones.

Winemaker Tasting Notes
Avoyelles has put on the most weight during élevage. That weight, aromatics and perceived sweetness have taken it to rival - and perhaps even surpass - the 2016. The main lots for this wine are co-fermented, leading to a slow evolution of the first half of the wine’s life in barrel, and a near catapult of complexity in the latter part of élevage. Aromatics of black cherry, red rose petals, crème de cassis and iron filings burst over the classic red dirt notes of the eastern Oakville hills. Primary flavors juxtapose fruit and savory: ripe black cherry pie filling layer with hoisin, cocoa, soy and lavender. The finish is full of sweet tannins, dusting the tongue ever so slightly to compel you back for a second (or third) glass. Densely packed, decanting reveals even more richness as the wine unfolds.

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Oakville Ranch Avoyelles is composed of 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers up fragrant scents of cherry pie, blackberry preserves and mulberries with hints of violets, pencil lead, cedar and a touch of iron ore. The powerful, full-bodied palate (15.2% alcohol) has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the generous black fruits, finishing long and minerally.

95 Points - Vinous
The 2019 Avoyelles is Tony Biagi’s Cabernet Franc-based wine. Today, it is rather reticent, but that is not especially surprising for a wine with so much Franc (55%) and from this site. Time in the glass brings out the wines’ striking aromatic presence, along with layers of nuance that are a total turn on. The purity of the flavors is simply remarkable. The tannins need time to soften. That should not be an issue in time.
